“Lily in the City”

Posted by on May 16, 2011 in ART

The meaning of the individual in the context of issues raised by urban and modern society has been examined by Bulgarian artist Lyuba Haleva with her project “Lily in the City.” An exhibition of these works are on display at the art gallery Anima in Sofia, Bulgaria. Wood, newspapers,  and collaged paper  are mixed media prints that were finished in this series of large format panels.
‘Lily’ is expressed as a romantic image of a young woman displayed on the wrappings of Turkish delight candies.  haleva notes that her great grandfather used to produce the confections in the middle of last century, adding a sense of the personal and familial history to the pieces.  The artist wants to make it clear that Lily is not a symbol of feminism; the juxtaposed visage of the collages creates many questions about modern life.
