Celebrating the Sun

Posted by on Jun 24, 2011 in AROUND THE WORLD, NEWS AND EVENTS

People celebrate June 21 around the world for many different reasons. In the North, people welcome the beginning of summer, as its a signal that warmer weather is coming. While people residing in the South also embrace their shortest day, as it will be a relief from the sun and escape from the heat.

Native American tribes such as the Aymara people perform a ceremony honoring the sunrise of the winter solstice in La Apacheta, El Alto of La Paz. Mayan descendants also honor the sun’s return in prayer during a ceremony of the upcoming summer solstice in El Salvador. The summer solstice is also celebrated at the ancient stone circle in Stonehenge, England and several other places around the world.

NASA recently took pictures of the sun on June 7th and spotted an unusual solar flare. The flare’s resulting speculation was said to disrupt satellite communication and power on Earth. Though the occurrence fortunately didn’t take place, we will never know the future the sun has for us on Earth.

Whether you went to the beach for the day, became one with your mind in body in Time Square, protected yourself from the sun under shade, or climbed a mountain to see horizon of the setting sun, we should appreciate the sun and the power it possess. The sun is the greatest source of energy and provides every form of life that exists on this planet.
