Joint living groups present attractive options for creative individuals to share ideas, collaborate on projects, and thrive in a productive environment. ON Design Partners explores this module in their design for a cluster of four single-unit apartments in Yokohama. The private living spaces for the individual apartments are lofted in the sky, each one accessible through an exterior staircase that wraps around a triangular column. These four columns serve as storage space, structural entities, as well as figures to demarcate the semi-enclosed courtyard shared by all four residents as an exhibition area. The physical relationship between private and public integrate the entire complex into the urban fabric and encourage circulation underneath the belly of the building. Photography © Koichi Torimura
