M3 Chair by Thomas Feichtner

Posted by on Oct 28, 2011 in DESIGN, HOME DECOR

The M3 Chair, developed by producer Neue Wiener Werkstätte and designer Thomas Feichtner, exhibits an open structure made of very simple pieces of nothing but oak. The chair has been developed specifically for Vienna Design Week 2011, where it will be juxtaposed with the classic, Austrian FX10 Lounge Chair, and earlier work by Feichtner. While the FX10 Lounge Chair is a mass produced design expressing closure and heaviness, the single copy of the M3 Chair is open and light. The juxtaposition of the two designs represents a harmony between traditional workmanship and contemporary design. Through these pieces, Werkstätte desires to express a perfect unity between hand-craftmanship, tradition, and design. The M3 Chair embodies a simple characteristic that can only be found in pieces that are hand crafted, rather than mass produced. The oak contributes to the chair’s light construction, an unchanging trait which could only be found in a handmade, unique item. The M3 is made to stand out as an artistic design that is set apart from industry and mass-production. The M3 experiment expresses that design can liberate itself from the confined idea that furniture is limited to industrial utility.
