Brooklyn based artist Mark Reigelman collaborated with architect Jenny Chapman to put together the installation “Manifest Destiny” in search of areas of unclaimed territory for establishing a new home front in the remaining voids of Downtown San Francisco, California. Using a 19th century style and vintage building materials, this temporary rustic cabin is attached to the Hotel des Arts and about 40 feet in the air above the Restaurant le Central. Measuring about W7 x D8 x H11, the dwelling is meant to be homage to the romantic spirit of the Western myth and a commentary on the arrogance of Westward expansion, sticking out like a sore thumb in the city’s dense landscape.
