Creatures of the London Underground

They say New York city is like a jungle – it’s filled with wild and amazing human beings with much to offer. But a different jungle is splashed among the walls of the UK London Underground maps in an on-going project called “Animals on the Underground.” It is a creative venture where the London Underground has a zoo of mysterious animals who disappear and reappear on the thicket of abstract lines which fill the map of the Tube. It all started after commuter Paul Middlewick discovered an elephant as he was traveling home from work in 1988. Since then, an array of various creatures have appeared on the map including puppies, soaring pigeons, baby rhinos and sperm whales. The strokes and folds of the map’s zig-zag beveled-edge lines determine the form and features of the animals so that they can fit snugly into the Underground’s negative spaces.
