The Selvedge Armchair by Raw Edges

Posted by on Apr 12, 2012 in HOME DECOR

London based design studio Raw Edges (Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay) will present at Milan Design Week 2012, this lovely chair is a unique version of the Hallingdal 65, the first fabric that was produced by danish textile manufacturer Kvadrat and designed by Nanna Ditzel in 1965. The selvedge, normally found lining the edges of a textile while on a roll, is cut and isn’t included as a part of the end product. The piece is a celebration of this normally discarded portion of fabric. In order to build the chair, the duo released the threads within its woven surface which created a hollow sleeve. Then they placed two layers of different hues on top of each other and then restitched them together using a translucent strip. This resulted in a colorful rim similar to the selvedge usually found at the hem of raw fabrics.
