The Squish Studio by Saunders Architecture

The raging, unpredictable waters surrounding Fogo Island matches the stark and dramatic nature of its single architectural inhabitant, the Squish Studio. Just outside the small town of Tilting in Newfoundland, Canada, this structure juts out on its rocky strip with a sharp, dimensional shape which demands attention to this lonely slab of land. Todd Saunders designed this trapezium shaped structure with a high back and low front to look as if its been squashed from a distant view. The extension of the east and west exterior walls create a covered, triangulated south entry deck and a north terrace to overlook the stormy North Atlantic ocean. Vertical white planks line the interior walls and integrate in a fun, playful relationship with the series of narrow windows. The studio comes with a small kitchenette, a wood burning stove and a compost toilet. The power of its solar panels on the nearby hilltop illuminates this space at night making it look like a bright lantern on a rocky cliff.
