Socks Furniture by Greg Papove

Posted by on Jun 23, 2012 in DESIGN, HOME DECOR

They get stuck behind our beds and that monster in the dryer tends to steal them at times. Socks are those covers we like to put on our feet to keep them nice and toasty when its cold. But who knew they could tell stories? Vancouver-based designer Greg Papove created a collection of furniture that each have their own unique story to tell using socks. It’s an exploration of material production methods, human to object relationships and gives an opportunity for re-purposing items. The ‘Five Toes Coffee Table’ was designed to use the socks as press-fit clasps to allow users to change it whenever they like whether it be plain, colored or mismatched slips. The ‘Zap Lamp’ is a floor lamp that lights up through the shuffling of people’s feet on a shaggy carpet. The user zaps the tab with their finger to turn on the lantern using a low sensitivity touch switch. The ‘Unify’ sofa is formed from a team of uniforms. It’s slipcover is physically and visually grouping it together to offer a new life to thrown out chairs giving them a fresh chance to provide comfy seating. These pieces allow one to be playful and humorous while also generating thought about human to object interaction in every day life.
