Kevin McNamee-Tweed: ROC-KS
Rocks and black markers: a recipe for art? Kevin McNamee strips creativity down to the pre-school essentials with his new show “ROC-KS,” at Austin’s Big Medium gallery through August 3rd. Using found rocks as a canvas, McNamee’s simple drawings—Jesus’s likeness, a stone-age to-do list—link futuristic with Flintstones. The zany comments on modern life are (no pun intended) grounding. One rock, labeled “Notes From Pre-History,” displays a laundry list of pre-historic questions, including “DID I invent Love?” Though amusing at first glance, these satirical stones take a turn for the inspiring. Applying a contemporary perspective to the beginning of all time, McNamee collapses the intervening years, concentrating millennia of progress in a handful of ageless rocks.
