Homeware becomes hardware – or is it the other way around – with Gio Tirotto’s No Pause, a new cutlery design. The Italian designer uses a 3D-printer to fabricate the prototypes of utensils that have handles resembling the resin-cast ones of woodworking tools. The usual elegance of the fork has been traded in for functional prongs attached to a handle of a screwdriver. Similarly, the spoon finds a new home with the rounder handle of a chisel. The knife undergoes the greatest transformation and is almost entirely replaced by the silhouette of a hacksaw. The piece carries with it a good dose of humor since the unexpected rears its head and the contrast of thick and thin materiality makes the utensils look delightfully awkward. The matte black color of the cutlery is not only bold, but drives an extra punch of the satirizing of social etiquette and form that Tirotto aims to deliver. All that appears to be missing is a carpenter’s toolbox to house the set, but perhaps Tirotto’s cutlery is already too far outside the box.
