Paper Sculptures by Matthew Shlian

Paper folding is not just for kids! Artist and paper engineer Matthew Shlian has found a medium that allows him to convey a purely mathematical process as a stunning, three-dimensional representation. The answer literally lies between the folds – the paper folds – that Shlian methodically creates to produce his sculptural art. His Aleatoric Series features folds that create a relief of tiny peaks and valleys from marbled paper in a gradient of blacks, sea greens, and rosy pinks. Another set of works, Extraction Series, are boldly black-and-white, constructed from a systematic arrangement of pointed pyramids that imitate the effects of a magnetic field from a virtual attractor. Infinite are the patterns that Shlian envisions using just the 8×8 grid of pyramids; oftentimes, the result is a graceful, collective curve that hides the individual distortions of each pyramid. On some occasions, Shlian reveals the geometric footprint in two-dimensional projection along with his folded work, signing off with a flair that leaves the viewer wanting more.
