To what adventures, journeys, and sights do your shoes bring you? Commissioned by Volta Footwear, x-travelling serie #12 chandigarh by San Rocco Magazine depicts Le Corbusier’s famous vision for the Capitol in a traveler’s portrayal. To promote Volta’s cross-training line Strada, photographer Giovanna Silva takes her audience to Chandigarh in India. Though the architectural landmark is often studied for its significance in the CIAM manifesto and influence, neither history nor theory behind the boulder stone masonry and urban footprint are the protagonists of the photographic essay. Befittingly, because the building for the Capitol established in 1947 serve the new tenets democracy, Silva’s photographs for the series capture the common man’s visual understanding of the space. An interior image of the building shows a singular fan mounted on a wall overlooking empty seats and blue curtains, as if the objects were people caught in an unexpected candid. Other photographs are taken from a human’s perspective; a glance upward a ramp reveals two conversing gentlemen while another at the curved and recessed coffers that climb up the façade of the building. Silva knowingly restrains herself from depicting the entire magnitude of Chandigarh in order to draw attention to the humanistic experience, as well as the practicality and purposefulness of Volta’s Strada line.
