Whoever said that dolls are only for sweet little girls? Manhattan-based designer and artist Jason Freeny takes it upon himself to produce a more scientifically accurate Barbie doll – one that probably is not so much for kids. Half of Barbie is perfect as can be, but her typically plastic smile turns sinister on the other side that exposes more than Mattel had intended. To create the musculoskeletal frame, internal organs, fat tissues, and other sub-dermal surprises, Freeny carefully sculpts and colors foam with the precision of a surgeon and the visionary craft of Dr. Frankenstein. The effect is novel and amusing, though real doctors and anatomists would be quick to point out a missing bone there and a misplaced organ here. Anatomical Barbie is a companion to Freeny’s previous creationist project with the LEGO® men. The question that remains: which toy is next?
