Felt Clock by Sebastian Herkner

For German designer Sebastian Herkner, the design process is about problem solving and developing solutions to needs. The felt clock which will be manufactured and distributed by Leff Amsterdam, provides an interesting look at his approach to determining a design challenge. It is manufactured efficiently with respect to both time and materials, because each clock is one piece of felt that’s stamped into shape in one step (the two hands and mechanical equipment are separate). In response to global environmental problems, Herkner selected a felt that is 60% recycled PET (Polyethylene terephthalate, aka. plastic bottles), which means the clock prevents some post-consumer products from going into landfills. The material is also acoustically absorptive. And the aesthetic effect of the clock is an unassuming, simple element compatible with a variety of interior designs.
