Living Typography by Nishant Jethi

Art doesn’t have to exist merely for people. Artist Nishant Jethi demonstrates that man’s visual and creative pleasures can be transformed into a means to help other creatures as well. Living Typography is a set of wooden numbers and letters, a bright alphabet that doubles as small birdhouses. Specifically designed for the urban environment in which nesting space has decreased for the humble sparrow and her friends, the letters provide an aviary haven. The fun, stylized block letters are a bold statement and can be aggregated to spell out name of the current resident family, the house number, or even a brief, friendly message. Not that the feathered friends will care as much, but the colorful red paint livens and contemporizes the look. The entrances for the birds are cleverly disguised as the voids of letters, and some letters such as “S” form a two-bird split-level home. Don’t think of it as killing two birds with one stone; rather, housing two birds with one letter.
