My Couch, My Canvas by Annebet Philips

Posted by on Oct 13, 2012 in DESIGN, HOME DECOR

You can forget about losing those dimes and buttons in between couch cushions. “My Couch, My Canvas” is a sofa that eliminates all the separate components of the familiar furniture, and is a unique wood and foam construction. Designed by Dutch artist Annebet Philips, the foam form of the seat cushions and throw pillows are molded into one entire piece for a functional set in which one coach includes all. The coach expresses simple uniformity, but Philips introduces a fun element through the canvas couch cover. The single sheet of white canvas is sewn together to cover the couch in its entirety, with bold black outlines to draw out a separation between seats and pillows. The graphical quality of the canvas brings back fond memories of the pop art movement, particularly Roy Lichtenstein’s “cartoonization” of Van Gogh’s “Bedroom at Arles.” Though Philips has just finished producing the first prototype of this piece, she encourages others to express their creativity with the couch by paint the canvas cover with their own designs.
