Ridge Road Residence by StudioFour

Posted by on Oct 18, 2012 in ARCHITECTURE

Like those puzzles that pose the question, “how many rectangles are in this figure?” Ridge Road Residence challenges its visitors to count the number of views offered by the building’s simple, yet calculated design. The architects at StudioFour capitalized upon the Australian home’s location on a hilltop, which provides many opportunities for framing sky and land, and chances to interact with the surrounding environment. The orthogonal forms, whether present in the structural elements, extensions over the patio, or decorative touches, are highlighted by the large panels are glazing, and one of the primary windows creates a picture-perfect border around a tree in the distance. Even the cooking area in the kitchen follows this pedagogy, for it sits in a recess in the wall, the rest of the black panels drawing attention to the useable countertops. The doorframes are done in a similar black trim, which contrasts the snow-white walls, and humble wooden furniture within the home.
