Ecologic Pavilion in Alsace by Studio 1984

Posted by on Nov 20, 2012 in ARCHITECTURE

Ecologic Pavilion is a notably agrarian, straw-and-wood construction that brings a surprisingly traditional twist to our modern concept of “organic.” Located in Alsace, France, the residence was a Studio 1984 submission to the Archi <20 competition, which emphasized environmentally-conscious design. Ecologic Pavilion fits neatly in this category, for its design draws upon vernacular, agricultural architecture; the nearly-pentagonal section of the pavilion easily references the archetypical barn, and the interior rectangular prism insulated with layers of straw only highlights the house’s alignment with nature. A simple panel of glass, as a capstone to the concept, provides a generous, unobstructed view of the surrounding field.
