2×4 Pendant Lamp by Alexandra Burr

Posted by on Nov 29, 2012 in DESIGN, HOME DECOR

2×4’s are not just limited to home improvement projects. Alexandra Burr has transformed the archetypal piece of wood into an elegant pendant lamp imbued with a new sense of materiality and state of existence. The 1.5-inch by 3.5-inch – yes, 2×4 is a sort of misnomer – block hangs suspended by a red monofilament suspension, set off-center to pique curiosity about the lamp’s center of mass as the 2×4 is level to the floor. The salvaged wood, though whitewashed, bears past battle scars and nuances, the knots and streaks adding character to the modernist lamp. Inset within the wood’s thickness, an LED light diffuses through the frosted glass, emitting a soft glow that matches the understated, yet witty design.
