Ostalgia by Simona Rota

Much like the etymology of the photographic essay’s title, Ostalgia evokes stoicism of Eastern German and Soviet architecture with a hint of nostalgia and remembrance. The buildings photographed by Simona Rota bear sentiments of the mid to late 20^th Century, and are formidable works of architectures with sprawling plazas, concrete forms, and snow-laden roofs. The Lenin Museum in Kyrgyzstan and the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications in Georgia are just a two out of a handful of examples. Rota, from his 21^st-century perspective, portrays these buildings with a critical eye that highlights the illusion of grandeur – of what once represented unified authority – and casts pity on the fading beauty and increasingly lonely.
