Much like the etymology of the photographic essay’s title, Ostalgia evokes stoicism of Eastern German and Soviet architecture with a hint of nostalgia and remembrance. The buildings photographed by Simona Rota bear sentiments of the mid to late 20th Century, and are formidable works of architectures with sprawling plazas, concrete forms, and snow-laden roofs. The Lenin Museum in Kyrgyzstan and the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications in Georgia are just a two out of a handful of examples. Rota, from his 21st-century perspective, portrays these buildings with a critical eye that highlights the illusion of grandeur – of what once represented unified authority – and casts pity on the fading beauty and increasingly lonely.
