Your Glacial Expectation

Posted by on Jan 4, 2013 in ART

After a day of being snowed in, I had drank my hot cocoa, read my book, watched a movie.  I was thrilled to wake up the next morning to freshly plowed roads, an opportunity for my morning run.  I found deer tracks exposed in the snow all over the place, their cover has finally been blown. Every track, not that surprisingly, seemed to lead to another pond, another stream, another bubbling spring. Lucky for them, their destinations actually satisfied them with a refreshing drink.

Your Glacial Expectation are beautiful aqua illusions by artist Olafur Eliasson and world pronounced landscape architect Gunther Vogt for Kvadrat. They are actually flat round mirrors fixed against a flawless natural backdrop, which is what makes them so elegant and believable. The fresh blue sky and powdery clouds hit the horizon of fluffy tree tops perfectly. Even the scene where raw winterized trees with their exposed branches and the ground waits for construction, still brings a sense of peace and life giving properties in the “water feature.”

In the words of the artist, “What at first glance may resemble a well-shaped pond, proves on close inspection to simply be an optical illusion. Inspired by glacial lakes, whose glistening surfaces form a natural mirror, the permanent installation reflects the surrounding landscape.”
