Boxhome by Rintala Eggertson Architects

Party in the… Boxhome? Even with its conservative 19 square meter footprint, the completion of Boxhome in Oslo, Norway was celebrated by twenty individuals in the efficient, ascetic space. Boxhome, designed by Rintala Eggertson Architects, reduces a household’s amenities to the basics: a kitchen-dining combination, bathroom, living room, and bedroom. With an aluminum shell cracked with a cross vaguely reminiscent of Tadao Ando’s Church of Light, the residence uses the lighting effect to partition the wooden interiors. Clever substitutions of traditional elements – such as hotplates for a stove, and a ladder for stairs – offer fun alternatives in deference to the volumetric constraint.
