What child isn’t impressed by the expanding Hoberman Sphere? Yet, as adults, the colorful toy may become irrelevant, the neon plastic too gaudy and clunky. Dodeck Lamp from Berlin-based studio Merge GbR reinterprets simple geometries and its form bears vague resemblance to a dodecahedron, but with far more structural complexities. The monochromic design from the creative minds of Markus Dilger and Thomas Hiemann features tri-star components that form a decorative shell around a single naked bulb. Dodeck Lamp evokes the ordered patterns of crystals, and even the natural beauty of molecules and bonds. But not to worry — the sophistication of the lamp does not overshadow the fun; assembling the components becomes a hands-on exploration of the lamp’s physical design.
