When I was five, I was given a collection of wooden fans that unfolded to reveal hand-painted panels of flowers, mountain scenes, and peacefully swimming fish. The muted gentleness of the image and medium captivated me as a child, and I immediately draw the association upon seeing Morph Edition, designed by Friederike Klesper. Klesper transposes the smiling faces of women, originally depicted on Chinese posters from the 1920’s, to the Morph Chair from the German design studio Formstelle. The prints are seamlessly blended into the chair’s wooden surface, the complexion of the ladies textured and colored by the wood’s own grain. The coy smiles and playful gazes complement the wooden chair’s light construction and construct a new hybrid of vintage and modern. Available at Zeitraum
