From sea to sashimi, and from uni (“sea urchin”) to umai (“delicious”), photographer Robert Benson captures the journey of the sea urchin in California Urchin. His photographs document the mysterious albeit laborious process of harvesting, cleaning, and preparing the seafood delicacy. They are personal, and the close-up capture the sage wrinkles that line the harvester’s face as well as the brows knitted in concentration of the women washing each fleshy piece of urchin. And last, the prickly creature is not to be forgotten but instead praised; the loving preparation of its treasure ultimately rests on its exoskeleton throne, presented with glory just as Benson manages to do with his work of art.
