A volumetric converse of the popular 2D illustrated optical illusion of stacked cubes, Imeüble is a three-dimensional storage unit that seems to lay flat. Norwegian designer Bjørn Jørund Blikstad created each module so that their appearance head-on resembles an axonometric drawing of cubic units. However, closer investigation of the colorful units reveals that they are in fact spacious. Each of the pieces is angled precisely so that the highlights and shadows in play offer an ever more convincing representation. With the components locked into place on a base grid that hangs on the wall, perhaps Imeüble meets the perfect specifications for the hard-to-grasp realm of 2.5D.
