Michael Leavitt plays the role of the artist’s artist through his collection of “action figures.” Each of the 10- or 11-inch characters sculpted from polymer clay is a hybrid caricature of the actual artist and the artist’s trademark work. Among the colorful cast are Damien Hirst with his body ceremoniously split down the middle, Yayoi Kusama with her bright red-orange hair, Jeff Koons ballooning into a pink chrome sculpture, and Jasper Johns with his head as the object of target practice. Leavitt breathes life into these figurines with detailed attention to color – achieved through mixing the clay, not painting it – and a whimsical touch. Keep an eye out for Leavitt’s upcoming show this November back at Jonathan LeVine, the same gallery that featured the motley crew from The Art Army!
