Moonlight Towers by Andy Mattern

Moonlight Towers, a series of pigment ink prints, pays homage to the haunting lighting structures that stand 50 meters tall over the residents of Austin. New Mexico-based artist and photographer Andy Mattern has made it his duty to capture the unusual presence of these light towers that originate from the late 19th Century. Each tower is composed of a ring of five lights that illuminate the city in Texas as dusk falls, the exact moment at which Mattern documents these pillars against the gray-blue sky. But just like the moon’s changing face, the standing members of the Moonlight Towers wane; from the original 31, only fifteen are standing. Before the light permanently goes out from these beacons in the sky, may the Moonlight Towers continue to fight the darkness of night.
