Boat by Zhu Jinshi

While it’s impossible to say how long it may have taken Noah to assemble an ark, the appropriately titled 12-meter colossus, “Boat,” created by abstract artist Zhu Jinshi for Pearl Lam Galleries took a paltry three days to complete. Made not from lumber, but from thousands of rice paper sheets and over eight-hundred shafts of bamboo, this installation is also a great deal more fragile than other seafaring vessels. Chief artist Zhu Jinshi’s own life experience has been transferred unto the essence of this project, effectively projecting his own journey from east to west; from Hong Kong to the installation’s home in London. The tunneling aspect of the structure seems to become more like a portal through memory, transcribing a tale of travel and discovery through a delicate rip in the stream of reality. The Boat was presented at the recent inaugural edition of the Art13 London art fair.
