Remember the good old school days of book reports and dioramas? Chinese artist Zhang Xiangxi elevates the 3D displays to a new level, choosing the “tube” (the term scientifically accurate, for these are the cathode-ray TV sets) as his set. Miniature scenes inspired by his own experiences, which range from his parent’s living room to an old workers’ dorm, and are crafted from tiny props of cement, glass, stone, and paper. The scenes are surprisingly realistic, and you feel tricked by the small-scale tables, bed comforters, and ceiling lamps. Xiangxi’s ambition doesn’t end here, however; his current collaborative project with his wife Liu Tian Lin is a replica of a five-story mall locked away inside a large refrigerator. Cool? You bet.
