The illy Art Collection continues with a series of designs by Liu Wei, the acclaimed and highly original Chinese artist who previously collaborated with illy in 2011 for Galleria illy London and in 2012 for Galleria illy Beijing. The decorations on the cups, saucers and tins are part of a series from the work “The Purple Air”. According to Liu Wei, this work shows the ongoing urbanisation process and the structural changes which take place in contemporary urban areas. The result is a stylized metropolitan landscape rich in unconventional colors. The collection’s visual impact is very strong: saucer and cup seem to merge together into one whole. Available in both espresso and cappuccino cups with matching saucers. Limited edition collectibles, individually signed and numbered.

Liu Wei is one of the most interesting young artists now working in China, where he was born in 1972 and graduated from the Hangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 1996.  He expresses his creativity through many art forms: from performance to sculpture, photography, video, painting and installations. Liu Wei’s early work explored cultural, social and political ideas, while his more recent creations concentrate on everyday objects and on materials, including ceramics, “to seek the hidden value they contain”.
