“Conduction,” a photoset by Japanese artist Tomoya Matsuura, features “bubble art” against a black background. The clustered bubbles look similar to what one might find under a microscope, but they are actually visible with the naked eye. Strung with thread, the bubbles make up intricate, delicate sculptures, which, on film, explore the idea of how energy travels through form. Enigmatic and ethereal, Matsuura’s webs of water achieve the artful paradox of representing an ordinary process in a way that seems alien.
