Le Cercle Fermé by Martine Feipel and Jean Bechameil

Created by Luxembourg-based artists Martine Feipel and Jean Bechameil, “Le Cercle Fermé” (“The Closed Circle”) is an otherworldly museum installation of warped interiors. Echoing Jacques Derrida’s post-modernist idea of pushing past the limits of place, the alternate interior space distorts classical images of grandeur. Its hallway ripples as if water-damaged. Its drawers and cabinet doors bend and no longer fit in their slots. There’s an Alice in Wonderland quality to the way the unexpected angles twist one’s perception of the rooms. At the same time, the tall ceilings, all-white walls, and polished wooden floors represent elite Western architecture and Victorian ideals of stability. Curated by René Kockelkorn, the exhibit was presented as part of the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011.
