Architecture, Italians do it better

Italian Garage-turned-Loft

View all 11 Photos

For a client in San Daniele de Friuli, Italy, architect Edoardo Petri converted this building, a former garage, into the loft it is today. Petri expanded the sense of space with large windows that connect home, patio, and garden, allowing natural light and views to play a central part in the new loft. The interior alternately reflects and absorbs the light, its neutral tones ranging from warm browns to cool shades of black, gray, and white. The atmosphere is further textured by the many different materials that can be found in any room of the house—from stainless steel and concrete to glass and fur. Altogether contemporary in its diverse blend of color and material, the loft provides a visually interesting yet subtle backdrop for the homeowner’s collection of art and design.
