Based in Toronto, The National Design Collective (the NDC) advances Canadian design, materials, craftsmanship, and manufacturing. The Cairo Star Cut Concrete Clock, one of their latest products, was locally designed, sourced, handcast, and produced. The clock measures only 10mm thick and is surprisingly light at 1.8 kg (almost 4 lb.). Inspired by traditional diamonds, the timepiece is cut like a gemstone, giving it appealing, geometric dimensions that reach out into the room. The design is otherwise plain; its matte gray face has no markers and just two hands in optic white. In fact, two of the clock’s distinguishing features are hidden: the Seiko quartz mechanism and the translucent rear plate, which subtly brightens the piece with ambient back lighting. $150 at GSelect
