Since 1879, Kutani Choemon has crafted exquisite porcelain in Ishikawa, Japan. Handmade in the kutani style, their ceramics often play with bright colors such as cobalt blue. Their latest collection makes use of a simple palette of white and blue while shifting the focus from ancient to contemporary imagery. The man painted on the cups and bowls, among other tableware and tea ceremony items, represents today’s creative, energetic leaders. He is dressed in traditional garb but carries new-wave instruments, from a boombox and a piano, from a skateboard and a surfboard. Balancing old and new, the series subtly questions how both to honor tradition and enjoy the present.
