After photo-documenting gentrification in Time and Space on the Lower East Side, photographer Brian Rose turned his lens uptown to focus on the Meatpacking District. He collected his vision in Metamorphosis, pairing his impressions of the Meatpacking district from 1985 beside newer images from 2013. In the 80s, Rose says, the neighborhood would change its face three times in a single day. Before dawn, butchers worked in the meat markets, dressed in white aprons and splattered with blood. But, after the morning rush, the streets would empty, and Rose could see the decay of the buildings. Though Rose didn’t stay to photograph the scene at night, he heard that the neighborhood turned grungy after dark, when the leather clubs opened and sex workers walked the piers. As Rose’s present-day photos show, that’s not the case anymore. The meat market moved to the Bronx in the 2000s, he says, opening up spaces for developers, and the sex culture was pushed out, both by real estate and the AIDS epidemic. Today, the neighborhood is lively at all hours, tourist-friendly with glossy restaurants on every block. Check out the Metamorphasis over at Rose’s webstore, where the hardcover book sells for $60.
