French photographer Robin de Lestrade produced a series of photographs from his visit to Marrakech. Born in 1965 in France and currently a member of the French Art Directors’ Club, he has won numerous awards as both a creative director and an art director. Drawing from his advertising experience, Lestrade recounts his trip to Marrakech through photographs that read as endorsements for an exotic, traditional experience. Tourists and locals are absent from his photos – instead, Lestrade translates Marrakech through still scenes. Well-loved mopeds, outdoor markets with decadent fare, and decrepit doorways painted vibrant shades of blue and red lend his series a sense of warmth and leisure. The photographs, united through color and composition, are suspended in time. By cultivating charm with their depiction of tranquil decay, they could document mid-century or contemporary Marrakech – or function as a vision for the city’s future, as time erodes and enhances its environment.
