Chilean House Elevated Above a Stream

View all 12 Photos

This Aranguiz-Bunster Arquitectos construction can be found in Puerto Varas in the Lagos Region of Chile. Surrounded by forest, the eco-conscious home features concrete blocks, steel beams, and wooden columns. Its double-glazed windows, glass corridor, and large skylights bring natural lighting into the house. At the same time, the passageway, elevated above a stream, draws the residents and their gaze through the space and outdoors. The floors, ceilings, doors, and frames are all made of Laurel demolition wood salvaged from abandoned villas. The architects chose only harvested woods that are native to the area, making this “bridge” home a champion of environmental design.
