This Madrid home once belonged to the grandmother of graphic designer Yolanda R. Pila. When the property was passed on to the young Pila, she hired PKMN architectures to renovate the single-story house. In order to make the most of the small space, the architects installed industrial railing with three containers which can be readily moved to transform half of the open plan room into a kitchen, an office, a bedroom, and more. The modular units house shelving, storage, a chalkboard, a table, and a pull-down bed, among other features. Made of plywood, the system is lightweight so that it’s readily interactive and gives off a warm glow so the innovative, functional space also feels like home.
