Formerly known as the Rotomolded Light, the Claude Light is an inspired pendant lamp designed and produced by the German design student Annika Frye. The shade is formed in a handmade rotational molding machine, hence the previous name. The process has not changed, but Frye says that the new name for the design refers to the physiologist Claude Bernard or the anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss, invoking great thinkers who have contributed to our understanding of science and culture.

The namesake also nods to the experiments that Frye did to find the right material for her lamp. After many tests, she finally settled on polymer plaster, which forms a smooth lampshade while retaining a visible seam. The exposed element invites end users to ask how the product was created at the same time that they admire the sanded and finished object. Luckily for her followers, Frye collaborated with Tania Ost to document her process in this video on Vimeo.

Available from the French studio HARTÔ, the lamp comes in white, red, or green with a matching woven cord and a contrasting interior. The accompanying fixture is sandblasted plexiglass for utmost durability. Find this strong design online here for €230.
