Created by Tokujin Yoshioka for AU by KDDI, the FxO smartphone is a truly open design with Firefox OS and a transparent shell that shows the mechanics inside. The bare presentation seems at once futuristic and nostalgic. Though similar parts can be found in any phone, their very exposure makes the FxO seem especially advanced. At the same time, the FxO’s aesthetic recalls retro designs such as the Gameboy Clear of 1989, while dressing up the look in grown up, champagne-tinted case. The transparency of the FxO is also, of course, a perfect reflection of the smartphone’s open source operating system. Altogether an inspiring example of how form should mirror function, this fresh new design is a sure to be a cult favorite tech accessory and a classic design. The phone is now available for sale in Japan.
