Photographer Paul Jeurissen of the Netherlands draws inspiration from landscapes and bike culture. He has been documenting American landscapes since 1981, when he cycled the Transamerican trail and met his wife, cyclist Grace Johnson. Jeurissen and Johnson began touring together, riding and photographing their way around the world. Their travels inspired Jeurissen to turn his lens to cyclists themselves. Looking at how people handle their bikes, Jeurissen began to focus on bike culture in an international context. Yet he didn’t leave landscape behind. Combining his passions for wilderness and bicycles, Jeurissen pioneered “small red cyclist,” a style of photography which juxtaposes vast natural scenery with a red bicyclist for scale.
