Brutal London: Paper Miniatures of Brutalist Architecture

Brutal doesn’t always mean violent. In this case, the word comes from the French for “raw concrete.” Characterizing large concrete monoliths from the 1960s and ‘70s, brutalism is a type of architecture that can be found in big, Western cities such as London. Hence, the Brutal London project is about buildings, not crime.

More precisely, Brutal London is a five-part collection of paper miniatures by zupamarket, a self-described “Hispano-Polish creative design studio” with a love for architecture and typography. The series represents a mix of iconic and fallen buildings such as the Balfron Tower, Space House, Robin Hood Gardens, Aylesbury Estate, and Ledbury Estate. Decorated in excruciating detail, each model is printed on three sheets of 100% recycled paper and sold for 4.5€ a pop. The pages can be easily assembled and propped up anywhere from a desk to a bedside table. As smart as it is versatile, each set includes a note on the architects, year of construction, and location, so one can go beyond the pretty little decoration and learn more about this short-lived but influential architectural style.
