Formerly an old house, this historic space was recently converted into Boulanger Kaiti, a bakery in Fukuoka, Japan. Renovated by Movedesign, the new business retains much of its original flavor, establishing a domestic atmosphere to be enjoyed by both locals and traveling foodies.

From outside, a hungry passerby can peek at the days’ bread, visible through the long, front-facing window. One may also admire the combination of the sweet painted parlor; the rustic, timber-clad volume; and the pitched tile roof. All of these elements give the building more texture and interest, just like the crust heightens the appeal of a good loaf.

Inside, there are home-y accents such as parquet floors and colorfully painted walls, so that customers feel almost as if they are being welcomed into a friend’s home for a meal. Visitors can walk around the central table and pick out their favorite bread to take home or bite into while sitting at the window-side bar. Either way, the architecture suggests that buying bread should be a warm, relaxing experience, and creates just that for patrons of Boulanger Kaiti.
