A contemporary take on the Catalan “masia,” or stone farmhouse, the House was created by architects Anna and Eugeni Bach in Girona, Spain. Like a traditional masia, the exterior is clad in local stone. The material is more than just a colloquial aesthetic choice; it saves natural resources and insulates the home, making the design more energy-efficient.

Sustainable and low-tech, the home features cross-ventilation, rainwater irrigation, and a solar-powered wood-chip heater which warms the water supply and the rooms. Much of the interior is lined with brick, which helps block heat in the summer and trap it during the winter months. Additionally, the floors and beams are crafted from wood, another natural material with desirable passive heating and cooling qualities. Altogether, these eco-friendly elements make the house easier to maintain and enjoy.

The home welcomes the residents and their guests to take advantage of indoor and outdoor spaces. Inside, the built-in bookshelves are waiting to be perused and the window seat beckons. Outside, the ground floor patio provides plenty of space to relax and the balcony provides a simple nook with diamond mesh fence for railing. No matter where one turns, the house offers up plenty of ways to soak up the sun and admire the countryside.
