After living in London for several years, architect Dimitar Karanikolov of Meshroom and interior designer Veneta Niklova moved back to their home city, Sofia, Bulgaria. The couple chose an attic apartment for their humble abode and renovated the unique space for themselves.

The updated apartment centers around a dark service box, which is clad in concrete and replete with features on every side. The unit houses a bookshelf, a home office, a bathroom, and a staircase, which leads up to the lofted guest suite.
Hidden from view, the loft is a cozy nook outfitted with a bed and an in-floor bathtub. Guests will feel as if they’ve slipped away to a storybook realm with old-timey decor.

The rest of the apartment exudes a similarly dreamy, nostalgic charm. All brought together under a rounded roof, the interior is filled with custom-made furniture that harkens back to an earlier age. By the brick-walled fireplace, for instance, a vintage leather suitcase serves as a coffee table.

Beyond the interior, there is a wood-lined deck furnished with a nice, lengthy bench and partially concealed by shrubbery. The outdoor space provides a little garden amidst the city. Plus, from most points in the apartment, the area is visible through the glazed windows and sliding glass doors, so there’s a natural touch to this urban enclave.
