A Photographer’s Sun-lit Backyard Studio

The Light Shed was designed and built by FT Architects for a photographer in Kanagawa, Japan. Located behind the artist’s home, the small studio puts everything he needs to stage a good photo right in his backyard. The atelier features a plywood roof, which is gabled and transformed to let light in at controlled angles. Walled in cedar wood and translucent polycarbonate panels, the interior balances warm and cool ambient lighting. The structure is supported with three naturally finished pine-log ridge beams and several spruce rafters, which are painted white like the minimalist interior walls. Additionally, there is a large window facing the garden, letting in extra sunlight and inspiration.
