In 1895, David Berti opened a knife-making workshop in Scarperia, Italy, a municipality already known for its strong blades. He found a space on via dell’Oche, and then and there Coltellerie Berti was born, tucked away in northern Tuscany. The knife company soon earned a reputation for striking the balance between sturdy and flexible blades, and they have kept their good name on through today. Passing through the family from David to Severino to Alvaro and now to Andrea, the Berti business maintains its dedication to traditional craftsmanship and the strictest quality.

One of the oldest remaining brands of its kind, Coltellerie Berti makes their essential collection in the same way that it was designed and crafted in the late 19th century. That means no exported labor, no mechanized shortcuts, and no assembly lines. Each blade is handmade by and engraved with the initials of a single artisan. As a result of the authentic process, the craftsmen take special pride in their work and learn the feel of the knife in all stages of production by holding it in their bare hands. The intimate method attunes the maker to the quality of the finished knife and helps ensure that only the best items are then packaged for sale.

A Coltellerie Berti knife is functional and long-lasting. Each no-nonsense design is intended for everyday use and will last for generations if routinely cleaned and sharpened. Truly a sustainable investment, a knife of this caliber costs a pretty penny but can be passed down as an heirloom. The blade is fashioned from stainless steel or, in the case of the Japanese-style knives, both stainless and carbon steel. Beautiful and tough, the handle is made of materials such as bosso wood, lucite, and ox horn.

Our favorites from the Coltellerie Berti collection include classic Italian and Japanese heritage designs, boxed sets for cheese and dinner, paired blades for carving and serving, a holiday-worthy nutcracker, and, for variation from the theme of food, the Tuscan brand’s staple desktop cigar cutter. These timeless sharps will soon be available in Gessato’s own shop. Be sure to add them to your wishlist.
